An Afternoon Along the Fall River
Finally, after several years, we returned to one of my favorite places in Idaho. This tucked-away river is far from the size and volume of its neighbors like the Henry's Fork and Snake River, however, as is mentioned in its name, the Fall River has several prominent waterfalls that are worth the trek to see! Namely, we visited Sheep and Cave Falls on this trip.
Fun fact, Cave Falls is in the boundary of Yellowstone, in the southwest corner of the park, only accessible from Idaho. Therefore, park rules and fees apply here, so be mindful of that. Sheep Falls is out of the park and still in Idaho, so the trail and road is a bit more wild and less maintained. Both falls offer unique and beautiful up-close experiences! I like the shape of Sheep Falls with its iconic bowl-shaped fall structure. Cave Falls is more a step down in the river, however, it is slightly taller (from my perspective, I'm not sure on exact heights of the two).
This time of year, the water level is typically very low, however, recent rainfall in the mountains has bolstered the river's flow and increased the drama of the falls. I love visiting this area this time of year because the falls are more defined compared to the spring overflow that dulls the defining features of both falls.
We did see evidence of big game, but didn't see the animals themselves. It was a quiet excursion with few people too. Altogether, a beautiful weekend excursion prior to a busy week. My brother's younger kids managed the 6 mile round-trip hike just fine. Our little girl, Carter, rode in the specially designed backpack on my back. She really enjoyed this trip and did fairly well minus getting back in the pack each time we were to continue down the trail. She much preferred playing in the dirt with the sticks and leaves!
